How ‘Leher’ by Nikhil D’Souza reinforces his acoustic prowess

Nikhil D’Souza, the voice behind Bollywood hits “Mere Bina” and “Shaam,” has captivated audiences with his melodious, soft-yet-powerful vocals for over a decade. In recent years, this versatile artist has also made significant strides in the independent music scene, collaborating with international producers and performing at prestigious venues like the London Palladium. His 2020 EP ‘Waqt’ topped Rolling Stone India’s charts, while his bold music video “Because Because Because” clinched a win at the South London Film Festival.

D’Souza returns with ‘Leher,’ a five-track Hindi EP that bridges past and present. The EP features introspective lyrics, primarily acoustic arrangements, and Nikhil’s soothing vocals. This soulful compilation explores the ebbs and flows of relationships, from yearning to new love to heartbreak. With ‘Leher,’ D’Souza aims to capture the dynamic highs and lows of romance, blending old-school charm with modern songwriting to create a relatable musical journey for the listener.

The EP kicks off with ‘Dobara,’ invoking nostalgia with its opening electric guitar riffs. Nikhil D’Souza’s impressive falsetto and evocative lyrics immediately set a poignant yet upbeat tone, making you groove from the first listen. The song is a lyrical reflection on past love, serenading old memories. Its masterful composition, rich with varied instrumentation, creates a magical soundscape. Nikhil’s unique character shines throughout, especially as the track crescendos to an emotional high note. ‘Dobara’ impeccably balances moments of silence and music, making it a standout start to the EP.

The second track, ‘Muskaan,’ epitomises the essence of the EP ‘Leher,’ which means waves. This mellifluous song drifts gently through its acoustic sounds, evoking serenity. The lyrics, brimming with romantic wistfulness, navigate heartbreak and acceptance. They depict an appreciation for lost love, resonating with an undercurrent of hope. The melodies are harmoniously intertwined, creating a single, soothing sensation that embodies the gentle rise and fall of emotions. ‘Muskaan’ offers a light, refreshing listen, capturing the bittersweet beauty of love rediscovered for someone who’s not a part of your life anymore.

The third track, ‘Tu Keh De Haan,’ starts with a striking burst of electric guitars, packing an energetic punch right from the get-go. Pinky Poonawala’s poetic lyrics shimmer through a distinct melody, creating a personal anthem vibe. The song leans towards a prog-rock style, with masterful composition and seamless pacing. Midway, it shifts dynamics, skillfully balancing romantic lyricism and powerful instrumentation. ‘Tu Keh De Haan’ feels like a breath of fresh air in the independent music scene, filling a gap with its innovative yet heartfelt sound.

‘Besabar’ starts off at an unhurried pace and if you are a Bollywood fan you’ll relate it with the song ‘Shaam’. This track is a balm for the soul, blending Nikhil D’Souza’s top-notch vocals with effortless acoustics and flowy beats. It strikes a mesmerizing balance—calm yet chaotically heartfelt—the perfect soundtrack for reminiscing about old relationship. The lyrics dive deep into emotional territory, featuring soothing whistling and beautifully crafted melodies. With ‘Besabar,’ I can confidently say Nikhil’s music is a genre in its own right, leaving listeners both comforted and craving more.

The fifth and final track ‘Socho’ is an acoustic masterpiece that puts Nikhil D’Souza’s vocals front and center. The guitar perfectly complement his voice. The lyrics tackle heartbreak with striking maturity, leaving listeners deeply moved. Nikhil’s humming interludes are nothing short of enchanting—how can you not fall in love with his voice? The clever use of pauses adds to the track’s emotional depth, creating a captivating atmosphere. As Nikhil reflects on past love, the EP finds its conclusion, but the music linger long after. The EP showcases Nikhil’s exceptional artistry and proves why he’s a standout in today’s music scene.
